Cookie Policy
Scope of this notice
This Cookie Notice supplements our Privacy Notice and its region-specific disclosures, including the Additional California Privacy Disclosures and the Additional EEA, UK and Swiss Privacy Disclosures. It explains how we use cookies and similar technologies when you visit this website, why we use them, and how you can control them. Where a cookie collects information that identifies you, or that becomes identifying when combined with other information, we handle it as set out in the Privacy Notice.
What cookies are
Cookies are small data files stored on your device when you visit a website. They let a site remember your actions and preferences over time. In this notice we use the term to cover related technologies that work in a similar way, including local storage, pixels and embedded scripts.
How we ask for your consent
When you first visit the site, a cookie banner asks whether you accept analytics cookies. We do not set them unless you choose ‘Allow all’ or switch them on under ‘Manage Cookies’. Strictly necessary and functional cookies do not need your consent, because the site cannot work properly without them or you have asked for the feature they support.
We use Civic Cookie Control to show the banner and record your choice. Your choice is kept for 90 days, after which we will ask again.
You can change your mind at any time. Change your cookie settings to reopen the panel, or use the cookie icon at the side of any page.
Strictly necessary cookies
These cookies are needed for the website to work, so they cannot be switched off in our systems. Apart from CookieControl, they are set only when a member of staff signs in to manage the site. None are used to track visitors.
| Cookie | Set by | Duration | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| CookieControl | Civic Cookie Control | 90 days | Records whether you accepted or rejected optional cookies, so we do not ask again on every page. |
| wordpress_test_cookie | WordPress | Session | Checks whether a browser accepts cookies on the sign-in page. It holds no information about you. |
| wordpress_logged_in_* | WordPress | Session, or 14 days if ‘Remember me’ is ticked | Keeps a member of staff signed in as they move between pages. Not set for ordinary visitors. |
| wordpress_sec_* | WordPress | Session, or 14 days if ‘Remember me’ is ticked | Secures the administration area for a signed-in member of staff. Not set for ordinary visitors. |
| wp-settings-* wp-settings-time-* | 1 year | Remembers a signed-in user’s display preferences for the administration screens. Not set for ordinary visitors. |
Functional cookies
These cookies support features you have asked for. They are set only when you use the feature.
| Cookie | Set by | Duration | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| site_language | This website | 365 days | Records which language version of the site you chose from the language selector, so we can show it on your next visit. |
Analytics cookies
We use Google Analytics to understand how people use the site, such as which pages are visited most and where visitors leave. This helps us improve the content and make the site easier to use. These cookies are set only if you consent, and you can withdraw consent at any time.
| Cookie | Set by | Duration | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| _ga | Google Analytics | 2 years | Distinguishes one visitor from another using a randomly generated number. |
| ga* | Google Analytics | 2 years | Keeps track of your current visit so pages viewed in one session are counted together. |
Google processes this information on our behalf. You can read how Google uses data from sites that use its services in Google’s Privacy & Terms.
Managing cookies
The easiest way to control the optional cookies on this site is to change your cookie settings. You can also block or delete cookies in your browser, and most browsers let you decide site by site. Blocking strictly necessary cookies will stop parts of this site working, and deleting the CookieControl cookie means we will ask for your choice again.
These pages explain how to manage cookies in the major browsers:
If you use another browser, please see its own support pages. To opt out of Google Analytics on every website, you can install the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on.
